The Art of Smudging

Hello Beautiful Souls!!

Smudge Sticks and Smudge Sprays, what are they actually used for?

In the United States the history of Smudging goes as far back as our American Native ancestors.  But Smudging has a history in many other countries as well.   Its specific use is to cleanse and purify.  They are also used in eliminating negative energies from a home/office or any space that feels like it needs a good cleansing!!

From the picture in this Blog, you can see a bundle of herbs tied together.  The herbs are made of white sage which is the basic herb that is used by most.  Hence the reason why we call them Sage Sticks.

You are not limited to white sage, especially if you create your own Smudge Bundle.  Other herbs that have been used are cedar, sweet grass, and lavender.   Remember to source your materials responsibly.

Smudge sticks may consist of either one kind of herb, or a mixture of herbs.  You will see at times the Sage sticks used with an Abalone shell.

"Abalone shells (known in New Zealand as paua) are often used in smudging rituals, not only because they are practical in that they catch the hot cinders that fall away from the smudging stick after it has burnt, but also because they are a beautiful gift straight from Mother Earth’s ocean.  Abalone shells are a thick seashell which shimmers with the gorgeous iridescent colours of mother-of-pearl.  They hold the energy of the ocean and bring a strong calming and healing energy, allowing you to remain connected to the sea - even when you are landlocked."

Besides the Abalone shell Palo Santo sticks are also used in place of the sage or other herbs.   As some herbs can be overpowering to the senses and not helpful if you have allergies.  The Palo Santo sticks have a softer fragrance to them.

If using Sage Sticks is not an option for you then there are Sage Sprays!  The herbs are mixed with distilled water and non-alcoholic witch hazel.   You can also add to your spray a bit of lemon essential oil or cinnamon essential oil.  Any oil you use that gives off a positive "AAAAAHHH" when you smell it is a good oil to add to your Smudge Spray repertoire.

How do you use the Sage Stick/Spray?  No worries, light the stick, and wait till it starts to produce a smoke about it.  Waft the four corners of your home or room that you would like to cleanse.

If you aim to remove negative Spirit energy, Jane and I prefer using the Spray. It's favored among Aventurine Psychics because it doesn't aggravate the negative energy we're addressing, and it works more harmoniously for us. We complete any necessary preparation beforehand, and then we apply the spray to the four corners of the house or room.

After we are done then we make a point in using the Sage Stick around ourselves and car so we know nothing will be following us home.  This is a non-negotiable for Aventurine Psyches.

We suggest you always use your intuition when choosing the Sage Bundle or Sage Spray.   Doing so enhances your intentions as well as a positive outcome.

Blessings Heidi and Jane!
